Ankle Sprain Treatment Loveland, Colorado
Suffering from an ankle sprain, twisted ankle, or rolled ankle? At Northern Colorado Spine and Sport, we specialize in providing exceptional care and cutting-edge treatments for individuals experiencing ankle pain and discomfort.
Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries, with an estimated 2 million occurring each year in the United States. Although common in sports, ankle injuries can happen at work, slipping on a patch of ice, walking on uneven terrain or stepping down a flight of stairs. In fact, half of all ankle sprains treated in US emergency departments did not occur during sport activity.
However you sprained your ankle, sprains can be excoriatingly painful, debilitating and take a long time to heal if not address appropriately. Understanding your need for rapid and effective healing, our dedicated team is here to guide you through a personalized recovery journey.
What Are Ankle Sprains?
Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that support the ankle stretch beyond their limits and, in severe cases, tear. This common injury can range from mild to severe, depending on the extent of ligament damage. There are three common types of ligament grades:
Grade 1 Sprain: Slight stretching and some damage to the fibers (fibrils) of the ligament.
Grade 2 Sprain: Partial tearing of the ligament. If the ankle joint is examined and moved in certain ways, abnormal looseness (laxity) of the ankle joint occurs.
Grade 3 Sprain: Complete tear of the ligament. If the examiner pulls or pushes on the ankle joint in certain movements, gross instability occurs.
Symptoms often include pain, swelling, bruising, and a limited range of motion, making it difficult to bear weight on the affected foot. There are numerous ankles surrounding the ankle joint. Depending on the severity of the injury, multiple ligaments may be damage which can lead to an increase in pain intensity and duration.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long does it take to recover from an ankle sprain?
Recovery times vary depending on the sprain's severity, but most patients begin to see improvement within a few weeks of starting treatment. Chronic ankle sprains (more than three months since the injury date) can take much longer to treat compared to an acute injury (within days to weeks of injury). The sooner you can get physical therapy for your “rolled ankle” the chances at a speedy recovery are much higher.
Can physical therapy really help heal a sprained ankle?
Absolutely! Physical therapy is crucial for strengthening the muscles around your ankle, restoring flexibility, and preventing future injuries. Damage to the ligaments around your ankle can lead to a loss of “proprioception” (the ankle’s ability to know where it is in space) which can lead to an increased risk of future sprains. Our ankle specialist’s at Northern Colorado Spine and Sport are equipped with the knowledge and manual therapy skills to rehabilitate your ankle in a safe and efficient manner.
Should I apply ice or heat to my rolled ankle?
In the initial stages after spraining your ankle, ice is recommended to reduce swelling and numb the pain. Heat therapy is beneficial during the later stages of healing to increase blood flow and aid in the recovery process. If the ankle is swollen, elevation of the leg above the chest will also help reduce the amount of swelling.
When can I return to sports or physical activities?
The timeline for returning to sports or physical activities varies. Our team works closely with you to ensure a safe and gradual return to your favorite activities, ensuring your ankle has healed adequately.
